Long-term Cost Savings
For the discerning business leaders, you already know
that cheaper isn’t necessarily better. Ironically, we all operate in a world
where directions such as “make things work better” go hand-in-hand with “but
don’t spend too much.”
What can you do to start 2016 right?
Tip #1
DOWNTIME HURTS BIG TIME. AVOID THE PAIN.
Get your lift trucks on planned/preventive maintenance
(PM). The less they break, the less downtime, the higher productivity they will
yield. Maintenance costs are lower than major breakdowns. Parts, labor, and the
time to get them up back and running will all negatively impact your
bottomline. We all know it’s not just about the production—it’s the operator’s
hours affected. It’s the cost of the parts. It’s scheduling the service.
Tip#2
DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
When you get your trucks on PM, make sure only
factory-trained techs touch them—otherwise, you may end up having to re-do the
work, risk greater breakdowns, and you’ll end up spending thrice the expense
you budgeted in the first place. Do it right the first time.
Tip#3
AVOID SUBSTITUTION.
Rely on OEM parts. It is worth every penny to invest in
original parts rather than risk blowing up an entire lift truck. True story: a
mere switch was replaced with an after-market version. Lift truck short
circuited four times. Were the few dollars saved worth the downtime, extra
expense, and headache?
Avoid substitution.
Tip#4
GO FOR LONG-TERM SOLUTIONS.
Choose to update to the newer, modern equipment.
Otherwise, you could end up buying again before the intended purchase cycle.
Brand new lift trucks are obviously more current and responsive to your needs now
and in the future. They come with flexible upgrade capabilities, software
updatable, and are more intuitive. Don’t take the quick route.
Upgrade with long-term in mind.
Tip#5
EMPOWER YOUR MEN
Invest in training. No matter how advanced your lift
trucks are, if your operators aren’t handling them properly, huge investment
goes down the drain. Don’t let them skip the operator checklist.
Update theiroperator permit way before it expires.
Tip#6
CHOOSE THE GOOD.
Consider the environment. There’s something greater
besides ourselves, our business operations, and profit. We need to be responsible
for our environment and do everything we can to sustain it. Consider electric
lift trucks before buying IC/LP. Electric yields higher efficiency, costs less
in the long-term, and reduces carbon footprint. Just think about it.
