Material Handling Through a Neophyte's Perspective

Being a newcomer to material handling, I can say I was never really aware of how expansive this industry is. Most of us drive by warehouses every day, never wondering what goes on inside. But once you take a peek, it becomes very intriguing. You realize that nearly every product that is on a store shelf today has to have come through one of these warehouses at one point, or another, in the supply chain. This means that our industry encompasses much more than just selling forklifts or providing service; it is in fact essentially the lifeblood of many businesses operations. Every business owner is naturally concerned with their bottom line, and when we break that down, we see that there are many factors that have an impact on this, even if they seem indirect. Safety standards are one issue, and we all know a safe workplace is a productive workplace, but how many companies are making this a priority? Hosting events in conjunction with National Forklift Day allows us to reach out to our customer base to give them the opportunity to take a refresher training course and stay up to OSHA certification standards. It also allows us a platform to showcase our latest innovations, especially within our electric equipment line—a product we are pioneers at because we know how it translates into a better performing business for our valued customers. Because our products and services are so widely distributed, we have to remain conscious about our environmental impact as well. Once again, we here at SCMH strongly promote convert-to-electric programs because the cost savings and added efficiency impact our industry tremendously. Operating an electric forklift opposed to an LPG truck saves your business $3 for every hour of operation and saves the environment from 25,000#’s of carbon emissions each year. For some businesses, this is a necessary change to be brought up to standards under the new California Air Resource Board (CARB) requirements. SCMH also understands that maintaining your truck or fleet is the other half of the equation. This is one reason we offer competitively priced Planned Maintenance (PM) plans. We know that a scheduled PM is not costing your business money; it’s actually a savings due to all the maintenance problems you’ll be able to avoid just by taking this proactive step. SCMH knows that every businesses operations vary greatly, and we have to be able to meet the needs of all our customers, no matter how big or small. We also understand that having a truck down for even one day can have a huge impact on your productivity and can even stop operations. Understanding these factors allows us to provide you with service tailored to your business needs. That’s why we have a team of factory authorized technicians—trained and updated in the latest lift truck technologies, available as soon as you need them. From the products themselves to our environmental impact, to our customer satisfaction, SCMH takes pride in every part of the process. At SCMH, we believe that the best way to show our appreciation to customers is to continuously offer them brands representative of quality, innovative warehouse solutions, expert service, extensive and accessible parts, readily-available rental equipment, and comprehensive operator training programs—making SCMH, their most complete and trusted material handling company in Southern California, for over 75 years. http://www.scmh.com/material-handling-through-a-neophytes-perspective/

SCMH Proudly Features the Jungheinrich Warehouse Navigation System

Increase Productivity, Improve Picking Accuracy And Reduce Costs With Warehouse Navigation http://www.scmh.com/videos-specials/videos/

The Jungheinrich Warehouse Navigation system can be used with all rail or wire guided very narrow aisle lift trucks, including the Jungheinrich EKX 410 man-up turret truck, EKX 513-515k series of man-up turret trucks and the EKS 208/308 series of mid- to high-level order pickers.

How does it work?

The Warehouse Navigation system is a semi-automatic approach to reaching pallet positions within the aisles of a warehouse. Transponders are placed in the warehouse floor at specific distances and are used to communicate with a RFID reader / writer in the lift truck to identify warehouse aisle locations and distances. Armed with this information and the forklift’s height measuring capability, the system knows its location within the aisles at all times and can be programmed to reach specific pallet positions by selecting the most efficient combination of traveling and lifting.

Warehouse Navigation can be integrated with an existing warehouse management system (WMS), allowing for seamless transmission of orders to the operator’s RF terminal that is installed on the forklift. Once the order is received, the operator can activate the accelerator and the lift truck will drive to the designated pallet position. The lift truck can then store/retrieve a pallet automatically, or stop, allowing the operator to pick from the current pallet location.

The Benefits:

Up to 25% increased productivity
Improved flexibility along with logistics performance
Reduced logistics costs
Pinpoint approach using the fastest route to your destination
Higher order picking and stacking accuracy
Adjustable warehouse layout
High throughput for the entire shift
Maximum Flexibility – Minimum Maintenance

More goods throughput does not have to mean more power consumption. Flexibility for any changes in the warehouse is a main consideration in the development of transponder technology. In the past, commands to the forklift restricted the user through the position of magnets or reflective markers. However, Jungheinrich’s warehouse navigation solution offers complete freedom. If a rack row changes in the warehouse aisle, the transponders are simply reprogrammed to adapt to the new location.

SCMH Promotes Sustainability, Productivity, & Profitability Via the Power Up

Hosted a forum titled “Power Up” that featured the benefits of switching over to electric forklifts.

Los Angeles, California, March 19, 2014:  Southern California Material Handling, Inc. (SCMH) hosted a breakfast meeting among its top clients to promote the advantages of using electric forklifts over gas/LP forklifts at the Sheraton Cerritos Hotel.

Among the benefits to businesses, as highlighted by keynote speaker Andrew Payne of EnerSys is long-term huge savings. “Companies would save about $6,300 per forklift, per year.” Payne demonstrated in his presentation.

Keynote speaker Mark Williams from the Air Resources Board lent his experience and expertise on addressing audience questions on current regulations and how much more stringent the rules will be on carbon emissions in the future.

Mitsubishi Caterpillar Forklift America (MCFA) was represented by Sr. Regional Director, Mark Brown who busted myths on electric forklifts. “Performance-wise, electric forklifts are at levels they have never been before.” Brown concludes.

Wrapping up the event were simultaneous demonstrations on electric forklifts and how it bests its LP/Gas counterpart price-wise, performance-wise, sustainability-wise.

Southern California Material handling has been in the service of the Los Angeles and Orange Counties for over 70 years. You may request information on how electric forklifts will benefit your company by emailing news@scmh.com.
