Can't Afford New Forklifts? You can Afford to Rent Brand New Ones!

If it is more practical for your company to rent forklifts as opposed to owning them, then it should make sense renting the brand new ones. Here’s why:

1.      BUDGET  If your business rents instead of buys equipment due to budget constraints, then you should be able to rent the newer forklifts that do not dent your bottomline further. Newer trucks mean less downtime. Less maintenance costs. Less excuses from your operators to get the operations of your company going.

2.      PRODUCTIVITY It is a given that the newer trucks drive your productivity higher. The functions on the newer forklifts are smoother. The modern features are available, giving your operators ease of use, resulting in getting the job done in lesser hours. Plus, if you were the operator, wouldn’t you take pride in using newer equipment? I know I would jump ahead of everyone else so I don’t end up with the beat up forklift.

3.      SAFETY SCMH’s rental fleet is equipped with the blue light technology that enhances safety in the workplace. This is an added warning device that notifies pedestrians ahead of time that a forklift is coming. This is great for warehouses that are noise-laden where a lot of have grown immune to honking.

4.      COSTS THE SAME as renting old forklifts. That’s right! It’s not more expensive to rent newer forklifts. So why would you rent an old, beat up truck when you can rent a newer, more efficient equipment for the same price?

What are you waiting for? Switch now to SCMH Rental Solutions before our rental fleet is gone! It makes a great Holiday surprise for your operators.

Routine maintenance comes with every SCMH Rental Solutions Equipment.
All forklifts are maintained by factory-authorized technicians.

SCMH Hosts Effective Credit Collection Strategies Workshop

November 12, 2014 WHITTIER, CA  Southern California Material Handling (SCMH) hosted its first workshop titled Effective Credit and Collection Strategies. In partnership with the Creditors Adjustment Bureau (CAB), SCMH organized the event to share with customers and business partners, insights and techniques from speaker Neal Gold who touched on developing business relationships, creating effective policies, essential negotiation skills, reducing bad debt & credit risks, chargebacks & unauthorized deductions, and even covered bankruptcy basics.

Controller Cindy Bautista opened the event to customer counterparts in finance, given the challenging economic environment that all businesses undergo. “Very much like our customers, we aim to provide excellent service all the way to the very end of the business cycle—collecting payment. With the help of CAB, not only did we learn of new techniques but were also able to exchange insights, experiences, and strategies.”

Among the outtake of participants from the well-attended morning was having gained a better perspective on cash-flow management in a tough market.
Neal Gold takes the group through an understanding of what motivates slow-paying customers.

SCMH Bags Kalmar Premier Partner Award

In the mail last November 10, 2014 came an elegant elephant crystal trophy addressed to Southern California Material Handling (SCMH). The inscription reads “For Exceeding Quality and Performance Standards”.

SCMH Halloween Celebration Benefits Make a Wish Foundation

October 31, 2014 WHITTIER, CA  Beyond the Halloween costumes, office décor, and fanfare, Southern California Material Handling (SCMH) employees seized the opportunity to extend the celebration to the cause of Make a Wish Foundation via candy apple grams.

Employees purchased candy apple grams and had them delivered directly to their selected recipients early morning. Proceeds of the candy apple sale goes to Make a Wish Foundation Orange County and Inland Empire. “The well-received desk-to-desk candy apple gram generated funds enough to jumpstart the involvement of SCMH in the annual Walk for Wishes.” SCMH Warranty Supervisor and Make a Wish Foundation Wish Grantor Mike Rosoff shares.

Rosoff together with HR Head Gabby Duran initiated the candy apple gram activity that not only gave the employees a chance to sweetly greet their peers a happy Halloween, but also contribute to a greater cause—helping fulfill wishes of children undergoing life-threatening illnesses.

SCMH Gets King of Queens Exposure

A little bird (an employee whose identity we were not able to request permission to disclose) told us about this scene from King of Queens where SCMH had a significant air time exposure.

About 11 seconds of tight shot and 30 seconds of full shot while the forklift was being operated.

Good thing though, our operators are well-trained enough to avoid the mishap on this scene.

Take Care of Business Before the Holiday Rush

Planning ahead is always a good thing. Especially when it involves the Holiday season, you may want to consider getting ahead of those deadlines. While you think you may be ready for all the celebration the season brings, you may need extra time for that surprise visit from your aunt, or hunting the present you always thought would be on the store shelf.

So get all the work stuff accomplished earlier then have that extra time to spare when those Holiday surprises pop up. Here are some things that you can maybe take care of in advance:

1. Collate data you need for that year end report. Yes it may be too early, but you can gather the ones from January to October already. This way, you only have to input data for the remainder of the year. Sometimes too you're going to have to collaborate with others to accomplish that report. Give them a heads up and let them start preparing as well.

2. Don't wait 'til your next scheduled car check up or for the service button on your car to light up. Bring your vehicles up to speed with oil change, brake checks, etc., ahead of time so that when you're running around town over the Holidays, you don't have to worry about car break downs.

3. As early as now, finalize the list of recipients of corporate gifts. Start signing the greeting cards and passing them around. This helps in getting them out in the mail earlier without having to worry about courier/postal office's Holiday delivery load.

4. Check the supplies in your office. Are you running low on anything that is more in demand over the Holidays? Plates, spoons, forks, coffee supplies?

5. How are your service vehicles performing? Are your lift trucks well-oiled? Batteries in place? Filters changed? Do you have a go-to rental company in case you need more forklifts to service increased demand for your products this season?

6. Are any of your licenses expiring before the year ends? Driver's license? Business permits? Forklift operator certification? Subscription renewals? Now is the time to check into these things before issuing departments and organizations for these requirements announce their Holiday schedule.

Now breathe. Relax. After you've taken time to accomplish these things, you have more flexibility for that surprise visit.

The Basics Humans Need to Live are the Basics Forklifts Need to Perform

Food, shelter, clothing, proper hygiene, medical and dental check-ups are what enables a person to live by a certain standard. Proper nourishment, rest, and care are what allow the human body to perform at its best. Shouldn’t we afford our warehouse equipment the same?

As warehouse managers, business owners, lift truck operators, we invested a lot in acquiring our forklift.
To have it perform to its potential and to extend its length of use, we must provide it with proper nourishment, rest, and care.

How long has it been since its last oil, filter, and fluid change?

For electric lift trucks, do you have enough batteries to alternate between?

When did you last have your forklift serviced?

Is it on a regular maintenance schedule as prescribed by its manual?

Have you checked the tires recently?

Are its braking systems up to standards?

For as low as $60, you can put your forklifts (pallet jack starts at $60.00) under Southern California Material Handling’s Planned Maintenance Program. This is an exclusive offer for new contracts. Call 562-949-1000 now and ask about a planned maintenance quote for your forklift model. You may also visit http://www.scmh.com/parts-services-services/ for more details.

Don’t wait until your equipment flatlines on you. Care for it as you would your own body. After all living is not enough, in the end, with optimum productivity; we should all aim to thrive.

At the Edge of Your Seat?

Are you literally at the edge of your forklift seat due to tears and worn out cushion? Southern California Material Handling has all the types of seats you can replace your old one with!

Your lift truck and forklift operator are hard at work. The markings on the chair show the number of hours spent hauling and retrieving materials essential to your warehouse operation. Some battle scars mended by duct tape perhaps, others left to fate. Unfortunately, the seats do not heal by themselves. Sometimes there’s only so much we can do, and in order for our lift trucks to perform better, like some human organ, a transplant may be in order.

Don’t worry. Donors need not be enlisted. SCMH has all kinds of forklift seats that will not just restore your operator’s optimum performance, but will suit your budget as well.

Southern California Material Handling’s rental solutions division announces the installation of a blue safety light that is an added safety system to lift trucks.

The JW Speaker Spotlight will be mounted on the brand new SCMH Rental Solutions fleet and will project blue or red LED light on the floor, 10-15 feet behind the moving forklift.

According to Tony Edgar, rental and used manager of SCMH, “This added safety feature is ideal for loud, busy work environments which increases awareness of forklift traffic.” Tony adds that SCMH Rental Solutions is prided for prioritizing safety and would like for its rental clients to benefit from this safety enhancement as well.

According to the Department of Labor, over 94,000 workplace injuries related to forklift accidents are reported every year, almost 80% of which involve pedestrians.

Workplace safety should not be considered an expense, instead, an asset. Renting forklifts from SCMH Rental Solutions is your first step to that added safety. With SCMH Rental Solutions, you are helping  protect your employees and your bottom line.

A Reason Why SCMH Prioritizes Safety

Unsecured Forklift Leads to Fatality

SOURCE: Forklift Action News, Howard, WI, USA. For forklift training visit our operator training page http://www.scmh.com/forklift-training-los-angeles/
A driver neglected to secure a forklift after loading it on the cargo bed of a box truck and paid for the mistake with his life, according to an investigative report from the Brown County Sheriff’s office in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

The report dealt with the circumstances of a gas tank decompression that killed the driver, Gerald Throw Sr, 55, of Sobieski, Wisconsin and injured his passenger, Jose Perez, 29, of Green Bay on the afternoon of 3 April. Perez was treated at St Mary’s Hospital.  “The (forklift) in the cargo area of the truck rolling forward and then the fork piercing the CNG cylinder is the only cause of this incident,” concludes Deputy Scott Vande Voort in the final 30 June report of the crash reconstruction team.
Fatal Crash
As part of his job, Throw loaded the three-wheel, battery-powered Yale ERP040 forklift into the white dual-axle truck and set the forklift’s parking brake. The workers intended to carry the forklift about 300 yd. (274 m) on a two-lane road between Howard facilities of Ace Manufacturing Industries Inc, a provider of machining, painting, assembly and testing services.

Throw was driving at about 20 mph (32.2 km/h) and began to turn into a plant driveway. The change of momentum pitched the forklift forward with the tynes puncturing the front panel of the cargo area and one of the truck’s five Hexagon Lincoln-made composite Type 4 pressure vessels. A fibreglass web was shredded.

The sudden decompression of the natural gas blew apart the cargo area, blasted off the drive shaft, kicked up the cab area, separated the back motor mounts and bent the frame, according to Capt Randy Schultz. The explosive noises and pressures were heard and felt blocks away.

The forklift weighed 6,396 lb. (2,878 kg), and the batteries added 2,600 lb. (1,170 kg).

As the forklift was removed from the truck after the incident, a high-pitched squeal could be heard coming from the vicinity of the parking brake system. When the system was disengaged, the squealing would stop.

The forklift’s parking brake system was operating properly and had been fully engaged, according to 10 April inspections by Walter Girardi, president and mechanical engineer at Girardi Consulting in Galesburg, Michigan, and Kerry Whitman, senior service technician with local Yale dealer Fairchild Equipment Inc in Green Bay.

The parking brake system is designed to hold a forklift in place at a grade up to about 15%, but not to prevent the truck from rolling during transport.

SCMH Official Address Change Set for 16 June 2014

12393 Slauson Avenue, Whittier, CA 90606

Southern California Material Handling announces June 16, 2014 as the official occupancy date at its new location on 12393 Slauson Avenue, Whittier, CA 90606.

After much anticipation, SCMH’s extensive inventory of brand new equipment, premium pre-owned lift trucks, brand new rental fleet, and highly re-stocked parts will have an equally fresh home to call their own.

“No move is easy, particularly if we are talking about the physical transfer of inventory as huge as our company’s” COO Mike Wolfe shares, “but our plans are in place and our customers should experience no downtime at all.” Wolfe assures that operations will be up and running Monday, June 16th and that SCMH’s doors, phone lines, and online communication will be open to all customers, as usual.

The new facility is designed to allow a more cohesive workflow among departments and employees—translating into even more efficient results for the customers. “We are proud to have a new facility that is more conducive to entertaining clients and giving them easier access to view specific equipment they are interested in.” Nathan Figgins, Sales General Manager points out.

While SCMH has invested in a facility that boasts of many upgrades and improvements, its main investment remains highly on its employees—the people who propel its growth now and into the future.
