Warehouse Planning for Seismic Zone Four in California

Planning is truly the single most important consideration when designing, developing and implementing a warehouse or any warehouse storage space in the State of California. Most importantly, it must be known that storage rack structures must be designed to function in California’s seismic zone 4*.

Due specifically to California’s seismic rating, very specific processes and procedures result in order be in “full compliance” with current Building Codes and the various governing fire authorities. Seismic zone four design applies, or is a factor, throughout the entire state.

A component of seismic zone four design is the proximity to known fault lines. This important consideration actually makes certain physical locations considerably more attractive than others. Warehouse Products (WPG) of SCMH can assist you in selecting the best location for your warehouse operation.

Does either of the following scenarios apply to you?

Are you already located in California?

If so, then please be aware any movement, relocation or “adjustment” to any existing rack storage “system,” regardless of the size or type, will require you to bring the structure up to current the codes and standards. WPG can greatly assist you in any type of a consolidation, addition, relocation or reconfiguration.

Are you planning to move to California?

Your warehouse operations may be virtually any other city in this country still seismic zone four “factors” must be addressed. This is where the professional planning of WPG can assist you with your project.
  • Seismic Zone 4 – Is a rating system defined by the United States Geological Survey. Please visit www.USGS.gov for further details and description. Per the USGS, four basic seismic Zones exist in the United States.

In a simplified explanation, each zone is rated or based on the probability or likelihood for earthquake (seismic) activity. The higher the seismic Zone rating, the greater the probability for earthquake activity.

California sits on a series of know fault lines, giving California the “4” rating. WPG has an extensive history of designing, engineering and implementing rack storage structures in this environment.
