Material Handling Through a Neophyte's Perspective

Being a newcomer to material handling, I can say I was never really aware of how expansive this industry is. Most of us drive by warehouses every day, never wondering what goes on inside. But once you take a peek, it becomes very intriguing. You realize that nearly every product that is on a store shelf today has to have come through one of these warehouses at one point, or another, in the supply chain. This means that our industry encompasses much more than just selling forklifts or providing service; it is in fact essentially the lifeblood of many businesses operations. Every business owner is naturally concerned with their bottom line, and when we break that down, we see that there are many factors that have an impact on this, even if they seem indirect. Safety standards are one issue, and we all know a safe workplace is a productive workplace, but how many companies are making this a priority? Hosting events in conjunction with National Forklift Day allows us to reach out to our customer base to give them the opportunity to take a refresher training course and stay up to OSHA certification standards. It also allows us a platform to showcase our latest innovations, especially within our electric equipment line—a product we are pioneers at because we know how it translates into a better performing business for our valued customers. Because our products and services are so widely distributed, we have to remain conscious about our environmental impact as well. Once again, we here at SCMH strongly promote convert-to-electric programs because the cost savings and added efficiency impact our industry tremendously. Operating an electric forklift opposed to an LPG truck saves your business $3 for every hour of operation and saves the environment from 25,000#’s of carbon emissions each year. For some businesses, this is a necessary change to be brought up to standards under the new California Air Resource Board (CARB) requirements. SCMH also understands that maintaining your truck or fleet is the other half of the equation. This is one reason we offer competitively priced Planned Maintenance (PM) plans. We know that a scheduled PM is not costing your business money; it’s actually a savings due to all the maintenance problems you’ll be able to avoid just by taking this proactive step. SCMH knows that every businesses operations vary greatly, and we have to be able to meet the needs of all our customers, no matter how big or small. We also understand that having a truck down for even one day can have a huge impact on your productivity and can even stop operations. Understanding these factors allows us to provide you with service tailored to your business needs. That’s why we have a team of factory authorized technicians—trained and updated in the latest lift truck technologies, available as soon as you need them. From the products themselves to our environmental impact, to our customer satisfaction, SCMH takes pride in every part of the process. At SCMH, we believe that the best way to show our appreciation to customers is to continuously offer them brands representative of quality, innovative warehouse solutions, expert service, extensive and accessible parts, readily-available rental equipment, and comprehensive operator training programs—making SCMH, their most complete and trusted material handling company in Southern California, for over 75 years. http://www.scmh.com/material-handling-through-a-neophytes-perspective/
